Working at a fish processing plant in Alaska isn't for everyone. The work involves standing in one spot for a long time and the duties are repetitive. During the height of the season, there may be some times when the plant is operating on a 24-hour-a-day basis. Sometimes, workers are expected to work 16 hour days with no days off. At other times, there may be no work due to a lack of fish to process. People who are hired by North Pacific need to understand the uncertainty before they travel to the area for work.
Fish processing plant workers are paid at a set hourly rate. Overtime is paid according to state and federal law. Employees working more than eight hours in a day or 40 hours a week are paid at a rate of 1.5 times their normal rate. Workers who have worked 1,250 hours are entitled to benefits.
North Pacific provides dormitory-style accommodation for employees at most of its locations. Bedrooms are shared with up to four other people. Bathrooms are shared with workers of the same gender. Meals may be provided in an employee mess hall. The company doesn't have facilities available for couples, children or pets on its premises.
