Kodiak Alaska (Region 3)
Kodiak Island in Region 3 is a 100-mile long and sixty-mile wide island located in the western Gulf of Alaska. There are several seafood processing plants in Kodiak City and the island is home to Alaska's largest and most
productive fleet. Kodiak boasts the largest fleet of fishing vessels in the state, and is one of the largest commercial fishing ports in the country. In days past,
the area was highly regarded among seasonal workers, but now most seafood processing
companies operate year-round with permanent workers; they process bottomfish and crab, and rely less on salmon. There is work available during the summer, but not in the numbers of other regions.
Two-thirds of this island, the second-largest in the country after Hawaii's Big Island, is consumed by the Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge, home to the largest carnivore on the planet, the Kodiak brown bear. The refuge can only be reached by boat or plane, as no roads enter it. The best time to see the bears is in July and August, when they feast on the thousands of salmon migrating up Kodiak's many streams.
Kodiak's bears usually avoid contact with people, and it's a good thing - they've been known to attack and kill humans. The island also offers less dangerous wildlife to view, including otters, mountain goats, whales, porpoises, sea lions, and a large number of bald eagles. Kodiak is nicknamed Alaska's "Emerald Isle" and offers great scenery and thick forests, but remember when you're packing that half of the year's days in Kodiak see rain.
