Alaska Peninsula and the Aleutian Islands (Region 4)
Region 4 includes all of the Alaska Peninsula and the Aleutian Islands. The Alaska Peninsula extends almost 600 miles from the western shore of Cook Inlet to False Pass. From there, the Aleutian Islands stretch an additional 1,000 miles toward Asia. The Aleutians are barren and sparsely populated. There are numerous active volcanoes, very few trees, and a dismally cold, foggy, and windy climate.
Seafood Processing Jobs
We strongly discourage greenhorns from attempting to seek employment in this region unless a job is guaranteed to them in advance.
Although there are dozens of processing companies in the area, getting there is expensive, and most processing companies hire their workers out of Seattle.
Those wishing to work in this area should write to processor companies in Seattle and try to secure a position. Those hired usually receive round-trip transportation from the Lower Forty-eight, as well as room and board. Because companies in this region do not process a lot of salmon, they do not need a large number of summer workers.
Aleutian Fishing Jobs
The deckhand job market also is very competitive in this region. Experienced hands might find employment in one of the larger towns such as Sand Point, Dutch Harbor, King Cove, or Unalaska, but it is inadvisable to go without a prearranged job. Unless you already have an offer, you're better off job-hunting in Regions 1, 2, or 3.
