Tonight at the Grammys, we saw a lot of great styles – from flowing dresses to tight minis to singers showing up totally encased in an egg. There were fashion dos and fashion don’ts – and the gossip columns, celebrity magazines, and viewers will be talking about the red carpet styles for weeks to come. With some hard work, this time next year, you could have a hand in the fashion you see at the Grammys!

Fashion professionals don’t become famous and start working with celebrities overnight. If you want to get started working in this industry, there are two routes you can choose:

Become a fashion designer, working to create fabric masterpieces

Become an image consultant, working to help people find the perfect dresses

How can you break into either industry?

Move to California or New York

Fashion professionals can work anywhere, but if you want to work in the celebrity gown design market, California and New York are the two locations in the United States where you can more easily find a job. If you’re interested in moving internationally, Paris is definitely the place to be!

Get Educated

While you don’t need a formal education to get started working in the fashion industry, it does give your resume a boost and helps you learn the fundamentals of fashion. There are diploma and short degree programs available, as well as longer bachelor’s degree and master’s degree programs for workers in this industry.

Work as Part of a Team

You may have awesome ideas that you’d love to see on the runway, but if you want to get started quickly and be working in this industry by the time next year’s Grammys roll around, be a team player. Apply as a junior employee with a design house or stylist, and pay your dues by working your way up the ladder.

Along with fashion design and image consulting, you can also consider other jobs in the fashion/styling industry if you want to play a part in next year’s Grammy red carpet. Consider working as a makeup artist, doing jewelry design, or styling hair as a way to help celebrities shine at big events.

Everyone has World Cup fever right now. As you try to tune out the vuvuzelas to watch your favorite teams play, has it ever crossed your mind that you could actually work for FIFA in planning the World Cup? Every four years, the organization needs thousands of employees and volunteers to make this even run as smoothly as possible, and while many of the jobs go to people in the World Cup host country, workers from around the world are needed to help with this event.

Tourism World Cup Jobs

This year, South Africa estimates that nearly half a million people will attend World Cup games over the span of six weeks. So, you can look for jobs simply by visiting the cities where the World Cup games are being held. Hotels, restaurants, tourist attractions, and shops have created an estimated 80,000 new jobs to deal with the World Cup in South Africa. This happens every year the World Cup is held in its respective host country. While these jobs may be temporary, if you like traveling and want the chance to do something different, you can find tourism jobs quite easily in the months leading up to the World Cup.

Construction and Transportation World Cup Jobs

Like with tourism, construction and transportation booms in the country where the World Cup is held before and during the event. Remember, hundreds of thousands of people travel to the host country for the games. Logistically, that can be a nightmare, since most cities where games are being held would never otherwise see that volume of tourist traffic. As soon as the next host city is announced, you can find construction jobs in that country. Again, these jobs are temporary in many cases, but if you like to travel and want to do something different with your life, this is a great opportunity to make money.

FIFA Jobs

Of course, you can also help plan the World Cup by applying for a job with FIFA itself. FIFA hires event planners, advertisers, accountants, and more, and this includes both full-time staff who have permanent jobs and temporary staff just for the World Cup. If you love soccer, working for FIFA can be an exciting opportunity to get heavily involved with the game.

World Cup Volunteers

Keep in mind that FIFA also needs volunteers every year to make the World Cup a success. Even though you don’t get paid, there are perks to being a volunteer. You have access to games for free in many cases, and might even get to meet World Cup players and coaches. This is also good experience for your resume. FIFA accepts volunteer applications about a year before the world cup is held, so check their website for more information at that point.

Are most at home at a heart-pounding sporting event? Do summer festivals really float your boat? For event professionals, that enjoyment can last year-round, since they don’t just attend events, they staff them! For some, event work is a lifelong career, for others its seasonal employment or even an awesome volunteer job. To learn more about the different job opportunities at the world’s largest and most popular events, check out JobMonkey’s newest section on Event & Festival Jobs.

Nanny & AuPair Jobs
If you are interested in providing in-home care for babies and young children, you should definitely check out JobMonkey’s newest section on nanny jobs. There’s plenty of information about working as an au pair — a job title that fits young women (ages 18-26) who are foreign-born and come to the United States to care for children. You will also find plenty of tips on working as a nanny, whose broadly defined job, according to one large nanny association, is to “provide support to the family by serving as a loving, nurturing and trustworthy companion to the children.”
