Business Week ran a fascinating article a few weeks ago about how to find a job during America’s economic recovery. As I’ve long been harping on here at the JobMonkey, the earliest growth will be in one of four fields: health care, education, government employment, and green business. In fact, these four fields have been some of the most stable over the past 8 months of the recession, posting positive growth numbers over a number of months despite record-high layoffs in nearly every other field. Here are some of the highlights from BWeek’s article on landing one of these &#...

The state of New Jersey has developed an innovative program to help stem its projected nursing shortage: a $22 million scholarship fund known as the New Jersey Nursing Initiative. The privately funded initiative provides tuition and living stipend to nurses going back to school for a MA or PhD in nursing. The catch is that recipients must commit to being nursing instructors at one of eight New Jersey schools for at least three years after they graduate. According to a recent article in the Philadelphia Inquirer, the nursing shortage problem is not due to a  lack of interested nursing stude...

The Department of Labor reported this morning that the number of layoffs slowed to a net total of 247,000 jobs lost in July — the fewest layoffs in a year and significantly less than the 320,000 that analysts were predicting. The unemployment rate also declined for the first time in 15 months by one-tenth of a point, from 9.5 percent in June to 9.4 percent in July. At an upbeat press conference in the Rose Garden, President Obama declared that the “worst may be behind us” and that “today we’re pointed in the right direction.” Despite his optimism, the pre...

If you are interested in earning green by going green, there is good news for you, according to a recent USA TODAY article: Students can choose from a variety of new “green” degree programs. David Soto of The Princeton Review says student interest is driving colleges to create programs that offer training in sustainability. Two-thirds of students surveyed for the company’s recent “College Hopes and Worries” survey said ...

JobMonkey is not a college financial aid website, but many who visit us are thinking about going back to college. And for good reason: A college degree is an invaluable asset. Studies show that associate degree holders earn an average of $1.6 million over the course of their working life. Bachelor’s degree holders will earn $2.1 million, and doctoral and professional degree holders can make as much as $4.4 million. But just how much will those bumps in salary cost you? The job market is softer than it has been in decades and more and more people are returning to school. For many, the motivation in going back to school is to inoculate their careers. For others, it’s just a friendly place to wait out the recession. Whatever the reason, the higher education boom has been felt across the spectrum, but nowhere more so than in online education. According to the Sloan Consortium, online education grew much faster in 2008 than brick-and-mortar schools. There’s been a major jump in enrollment for online colleges, with some websites reporting 18 percent...
