TUNICA - ROBINSONVILLE, MISSISSIPPI - CASINO JOBSSmack in the heart of the Delta, Tunica and Robinsonville are two small southern towns with lots of heart. Due west of Oxford�the setting for William Tunica County supports several riverboat casinos. Mississippi's gambling laws are the most liberal of all the states, with no limits on bets or losses. The "boats" for the most part are not seaworthy. Indeed, Mississippi law prohibits the boats from leaving dock for gaming activities, a big plus for casino owners who are relieved from the navigational and maintenance expenses of a real boat. Mississippi is a conservative state, for the most part morally opposed to gaming. However, Mississippi is also a poor state, and appreciates the 12 percent tax skimmed off the top of casino earnings. With little industry and commerce, casinos bring both jobs and revenue to an area known as the poorest county in the richest country in the world. To make everyone comfortable, Mississippi confines its casinos to the river, easing worries some residents had about land-based casinos springing up in their backyards. Beyond the casinos, Tunica County offers some of the South's best fishing and hunting. Bottomland forests are loaded with game, and placid lakes hold abundant fish and waterfowl. Bald eagles winter in the area, and nearby are two top-rate fishing holes: Tunica Cutoff and Flower Lake. For more rigorous sports, Arkabutla Lake is a manmade, flood-control reservoir perfect for sailing and waterskiing; it also offers great fishing. There's not much housing in the area, but cost of living is low and the casinos are helping rebuild the community, reports the Tunica County Chamber of Commerce. Look for this area to continue to grow and add new services. Already the tax revenue from Tunica County's new industry has dramatically improved the public school system. Nearly $4,500 is now being spent by the county per student annually for education. New housing starts are also up.
