Television Style Gurus

While most cosmetologists who work in the television industry are behind the scenes, some score reality TV jobs, which put them in front of the camera, like Ted Gibson, the cosmetologist featured on TLC's "What Not to Wear."

Gibson is arguably one of the most sought-after editorial, runway and celebrity hairstylists in the business. According to tlc.discovery.com, his work has been featured in print publications such as Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, Elle, Marie Claire, Vanity Fair, Cosmopolitan, Rolling Stone and Allure, and he has also done runway work for Chanel, Prada, and Dolce & Gabbana. Ted is the hairdresser of choice for top celebrities such as Angelina Jolie, Amanda Bynes, Demi Moore, Renae Zellweger, Joy Bryant, Anne Hathaway, Elettra Rossellini, Claire Danes, Petra Nemcova, Keira Knightley, Gabrielle Union, Jessica Alba, Diane Sawyer, Sara Foster, Vanessa Carlton and Amerie, to name a few.

On "What Not to Wear," Gibson does the hairstyle portion of the makeover. In an interview with www.eye4style.com, Gibson compared role on "What Not to Wear" with working on both everyday and celebrity clients. "Working on What Not to Wear is the same as working with magazines and celebrities because every woman wants to feel sexy and special and wants a makeover!"

Makeup artists are also being featured on television. "What Not to Wear" also features the talents of world-renowned makeup artist Carmindy Bowyer, who has worked with top magazines like InStyle, Elle, Marie Claire, Cosmopolitan as well as the hit TLC show.

Carmindy was raised in Southern California and got her talent in the use of color from her mother, a watercolorist.

Carmindy became interested in doing makeup at age 15. In an interview with www.deepglamour.net, Carmindy described her inspiration, which was meeting someone whose father was a makeup artist for the television show "Hill Street Blues": "I thought, oh my God, there's a job as a makeup artist? This is great. This is what I want to do." One Christmas, her father built her a big "Hollywood - style" makeup mirror, and she began practicing on neighbors and friends. Eventually, Carmindy said she would drive to Hollywood, walk into the modeling and casting agencies and say, "Is there anybody I can help for free?" She became an assistant makeup artist, and her career was born.
