Federal Internships
The Federal Career Intern Program is designed to help agencies recruit people at the GS-5, 7, and 9 grade levels. Created under Executive Order 13162, this program provides a 2-year internship with formal training and developmental assignments as established by the agency.
Upon successful completion of the program, the interns may be eligible for non-competitive permanent placement within the agency.
Unlike the PMF program described in this section, the FCIP is not restricted to graduate students or even to recent graduates. People from other career fields may also apply. The grade range for the FCIP is a little lower than the PMF, but it still conveys many of the benefits (accrual of sick days and leave, health insurance, and on-the-job experience. Also, FCIP appointments may be made at any time during the year. This program is not administered through a central authority; instead, each agency posts its own FCIP opportunities.
