Health and Human Services Jobs
According to the HHS website, the Department of Health And Human Services (HHS), is "the United States government's principal agency for protecting the health of all Americans and providing essential human services, especially for those who are least able to help themselves."
In fiscal year 2000, HHS had a budget of $707.7 billion and 64,750 employees.
They carried out more than 300 programs including research, disease prevention, food and drug safety (through the FDA), Medicare and Medicaid, Health information technology, and pre-school education and services (through the Head Start program).
Also according to the website, HHS uses about 25% of federal spending. With Medicare, the agency is the largest medical insurance group in the US, handling more than 1 billion claims per year.
In a February 23 press release, Office of Management and Budget (OMB) director Peter R. Orszag said that health reform is one of the new administration's top priorities because it would "provide direct help to struggling families, since health care costs are reducing workers' take-home pay to a degree that is both under-appreciated and unnecessarily large."
Orszag also said that "for many states, health care is increasingly crowding out other priorities - such as support for higher education, which in turn had lead to higher tuition and painful cutbacks at state universities."
This reform initiative is likely to promote growth at the Department of Health and Human Services. HHS has the job of implementing many major provisions of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). At the moment, the agency is in the process of figuring out how and where to spend the $137 billion, and how to meet the Act's accounting requirements. Part of that money will go to new jobs in the healthcare workforce and in technology systems that will automate patient records. It is also likely that the agency will increase spending on research and social services.
In order to manage all the requirements of the Act, the HHS has established an entirely new Office of Recovery Act Coordination. The office is being staffed right now, and its main responsibilities will be tracking project dates and deadlines, keeping track of the agency's ARRA information, tracking results and communicating their progress with the public.
Many high-profile public health organizations fall under the HHS umbrella. These include:
- National Institutes of Health (NIH), with 17, 138 employees and a $29.5 billion budget.
- Food and Drug Administration (FDA) with10,070 employees and a $2.3 billion budget.
- Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) with 8,896 employees and a $6.5 billion budget.
- Indian Health Service (IHS) with 15,102 employees and a $4.3 billion budget.
- Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), with 1,540 employees and a $6.9 billion budget.
- Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) with 534 employees and a $3.4 billion budget
- Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) with 299 employees and a $335 million budget.
With all these different agencies, there are a wide range of job opportunities all over the country with HHS.
