Citizenship in the U.S. can be a Lengthy Process

In March of 2003, INS moved into the umbrella of organizations that make up the Department of Homeland Security, and the name became U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).

According to the USCIS website, the agency employs 18,000 federal employees and contractors in 250 offices around the world.

What USCIS Does

USCIS manages immigrant visa petitions, naturalization petitions, and asylum and refugee applications.

Who USCIS is Hiring

  • Management and Program Analyst: This is a job for an experienced person, and it involves taking a higher-level view of the organization and evaluating its successes and failures, and then making presentations and recommendations to higher-level management. This position requires previous similar experience. Pay range: $51,630 – 97,333.
  • IT Specialist Pay range: $81,823 – 106,369
  • Community Relations Officer: The interface between the government and the immigrant community. People in this position are usually assigned to locations with large immigrant populations, and they work to build relationships between the two groups. This federal job involves a lot of teamwork, a lot of communication skills, and a certain aptitude for public education. As a GS-13 position, it is a fairly high level position, but there are no specific educational requirements. The hiring emphasis is on successful previous experience in disseminating information to a community. Pay range: $60,497+.
