The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is a scientific agency under the umbrella of the U.S. Department of Commerce.
NOAA was formed in 1970 by President Richard Nixon. The new organization combined three existing agencies (the Weather Bureau, the Bureau of Commercial Fisheries, and the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey) into one.
The NOAA Corps is a uniformed service that is responsible for operating ships and aircraft used by the organization. NOAA Corps personnel also provide administrative support and perform scientific duties.
