Becoming an Engineering Manager

A person working as an engineering manager must have excellent communication skills, as well as a strong aptitude for mathematics. This person is responsible for implementing the technical and scientific goals set out by management.

Part of the engineering manager's job description may include making detailed plans to reach the company's goals.

They may work for a manufacturing company, research firm, or be involved with developing new products for their employer. The engineering manager is responsible for hiring and supervising scientists and engineers to work on projects. These people may work a 40-60 hour work week, depending on the deadlines that are in place.

To do this kind of work, the basic educational requirement is a Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering. You may want to specialize in a specific type of Engineering for your undergrad work. Some people working in this capacity have an advanced degree, such as a Master of Science in Engineering. A Master's Degree in Business Administration (MBA) may also be helpful. To be considered for an engineering manager's position, you will probably need to have 8 or 10 years of relevant work experience first.

The median salary for engineering managers is $115,610, exclusive of bonuses or benefits.

If you have good communication skills and business management skills, the outlook for engineering managers is favorable. The key is to include some business courses in your education so you will be an attractive candidate to prospective employers.
