Happy Hump Day. It’s job announcement day and the Job Monkey free job center is brimming with new job listings. If you love animals, today’s Hot Jobs are definitely for you.

I am posting a range of animal job openings — from a college internship at the Oregon Zoo to a zookeeper position in Grand Rapids, Michigan to the CEO job at the Chaffe Zoo in Fresno, California.  And these three positions are just the tip of the iceberg. 1. Wildlife Show Intern, Oregon Zoo, Portland Oregon
The Oregon Zoo, a member of the Association of Zoos & Aquariums, is looking for wildlife show interns to assist the show staff with basic animal husbandry duties. Interns may help with the presentation of summer free-flight bird shows, classroom programs, and on-ground events. Qualified applicants are college students or recent graduates with a background in biology or zoology and some animal experience.  The internship is not a paid position, although interns will gain invaluable training in making public presentations. The internship period is 12 weeks during the summer; interns must be available to work 32 hours a week. The deadline for applications is March 15th, but the early consideration deadline is February 15, 2009.

2. Zookeeper Job, John Ball Zoological Garden, Grand Rapids, MI
The John Ball Zoological Garden, also a member of the Association of Zoos & Aquariums, is looking to hire a zookeeper. The person would be responsible for the daily care, feeding, and cleaning of the animals and their environments on a regular schedule. The zookeeper will also make presentations to zoo visitors. The ideal candidate will hold a minimum of an Associate’s Degree with an emphasis in zoology, biology, animal husbandry or wildlife management. The candidate will also have experience with feeding and caring for animals, as well as excellent communication and organizational skills. The candidate must also have a valid, unrestricted Michigan driver’s license. The zookeeper position pays a salary of $14.63/hour.

3. CEO / Zoo Director, Fresno Chaffee Zoo, Fresno, California
The Fresno Chaffee Zoo is seeking an experienced CEO with the vision, leadership, and initiative to lead the zoo into the future. The new CEO will be responsible for managing the zoo’s annual operating budget of $7 million, as well as guiding the Zoo’s renovation and expansion. The CEO, who will also be responsible for ensuring the highest degree of animal care, will also be extremely active with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. The ideal candidate for this senior-most position must hold a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in a relevant field; must have experience working with a Board of Directors, volunteers, community leaders, and the news media; must be a skilled manager; must have experience preparing and managing fiscal budgets and strategic plans; and must have a demonstrated record of success in fundraising.
