The book can be useful to people on a variety of levels: job seekers, airplane lovers, industry buffs. Paperback - 256 pages 2nd Edition (February 2000) | | An Introduction to Airline Economics by William E. O'Connor | Synopsis Since the appearance of the fourth edition in 1989, there have been further remarkable changes in the fabric of the airline industry. The industry has seen a series of mergers and consolidations, reconstruction of route patterns around "hub" cities,
unprecedented deficits, bankruptcies of two major carriers, and foreign airlines purchasing equity interest in American carriers. This work is a fine introduction to the economics of the airline services of the United States, both domestic and international, presented in a relatively simple yet college-level text. It contains substantial revisions consistent with recent changes, including a complete rewriting of many portions. It can be adopted for such courses as "Aviation
Administration," "Air Transportation," and "Economics of Air Transportation." For each chapter there are self-testing questions, so that students can check their progress. Hardcover 6th edition (November 2000) | | Inflight Catering Management
by Audrey C. McCool | Synopsis: The publisher, John Wiley & Sons: Based on a collaboration between academia and the airline industry, this book focuses on U.S. domestic inflight catering but includes ancillary information on international catering operations. Designed to provide hospitality students with an avenue through which to learn about the inflight foodservice industry and gain skills qualifying
them for entry into this field. Coverage includes equipment, preparation, storage, delivery requirements, bidding and the airline/caterer interface, waste management and recycling. Paperback - 426 pages (May 1995) | | Airline Literature | Hard Landing : The Epic Contest for Power and Profits That Plunged the Airlines into Chaos by Thomas Petzinger, Thomas Petzinger Jr | Synopsis Most books (and there are usually two or three new ones a year) on the airline industry treat it as a single entity, describing the effects of deregulation or strikes or
fluctuating oil prices. Or else these books profile a specific airline, personifying it by its controversial or flamboyant owner or CEO. Petzinger, though, combines both approaches. He portrays the airline industry as a boy's club run by only a handful of egotistical, ambitious, and arrogant men. Petzinger, once a baggage handler for United Airlines and now Wall Street Journal reporter and editor, colorfully chronicles the changing alliances and enmities of these men as they battle to
"win at any cost" and change the way the world travels. David Rouse. Paperback - 594 pages (January 1997) | | Losing My Virginity : How I've Survived, Had Fun, and Made a Fortune Doing Business My Way by Richard Branson | Synopsis In this autobiography, Virgin Group founder Richard Branson says one of his prime business criteria is "fun." Fun made Branson a billionaire, and few business memoirs are one-billionth as fun as Branson's, nor as niftily written. Not only does it relate his side of near-death corporate experiences, it tells how the chairman literally cheated death by gun, shipwreck, and balloon crash. Branson's empire--now encompassing
interests in an airline, pop music, soda pop, e-commerce, and financial services--began when the dyslexic 16-year-old dropped out of school in 1968 to found the British magazine Student. His headmaster said, "I predict that you will either go to prison or become a millionaire." Briefly imprisoned for dodging customs selling records, Branson got his first million by releasing Tubular Bells, a maverick recording
all the stuffy executives rejected. (1998's Tubular Bells III puts the series' sales over 20 million.) Despite wild tales of Branson's wife-swapping and Keith Richards fleeing naked from Branson's studio at gunpoint with another man's woman, the most shocking parts of the memoir concern British Airways' James Bond-like "dirty tricks" campaign against Virgin Atlantic, resulting in the biggest award for damages in English history.
Though it's filled with famous names, witty quotes, and pulse-pounding accounts of lunatic balloon adventures, it is as a business thriller that the book really scores. His instinctive bet-the-ranch tactics could cost him all, or earn another billion. Either way, Branson will likely remain the most entertaining entrepreneur in Europe. --Tim Appelo Hardcover - 370 pages (October 1998) also available in Paperback for $13.50.
