Eckerd Youth Alternatives
![]()

Eckerd Youth Alternatives (EYA) is a national leader in providing services for at-risk children. EYA is a multi-faceted, not-for-profit organization that offers 32 distinct and diverse youth programs in seven states, and has served more than 37,000 youth since its founding in 1968.
Although EYA offers a variety of career opportunities, the Wilderness Camp Youth Counselor position at Eckerd Youth Alternatives is perhaps one of the most challenging - and rewarding - full-time job opportunities on the planet. As a Youth Counselor, you'll hike the Appalachian Trail, sleep under the stars, canoe the Suwannee, and help at-risk youth at the same time.
Eckerd Youth Alternatives provides a unique experiential education program for hundreds of at-risk youth at 18 wilderness camps in pristine forest locations throughout the eastern half of the United States. The position is a full-time, year-round opportunity, not a summer camp job.
Five days a week, the Youth Counselors live at these wilderness camps with groups of about 10 boys or girls ages 10 to 17. Separate "time-off" living quarters are also provided for the Youth Counselors.
The youth and counselors live in large cloth and timber tents that they themselves build and maintain. Through daily outdoor living and experiences like backpacking trips , high and low ropes courses and canoe expeditions, youth learn how to interact with the counselors and each other. The Eckerd approach is positive and absolutely non-punitive. The program is designed to enhance the youths' self-esteem and assist them in developing the communication, decision making, social interaction and academic skills needed to succeed in society.
Not only are we committed to helping youth at risk, we're equally committed to helping one another. As an EYA employee, we train you and provide ongoing guidance and direction to help you advance your career.
EYA programs have consistently earned
national recognition and have ranked among the best for their effectiveness and success. The proven program models and the dedicated people who work with the youths have made EYA a leader in stemming the tide of youth dysfunction.
Whatever your background or past work experience, you'll find a place at Eckerd Youth Alternatives. Browse through the different types of job opportunities available with EYA at the Eckerd Youth Alternatives website.
