The low down on Online University Accreditation
Accreditation is a set of educational standards based on quality of facilities, resources, faculty and curriculum. For an educational institution to be "accredited" they must up to par with these standards in order for an accrediting agency to give them the official title of being accredited.
In the United States the accrediting agencies are made up of peers from accredited schools that review the institutions who seek this title.
Due to the fact that it is not the government but private organizations that dub education institutions "accredited" the term is vulnerable to malice. There have been and still are educational institutions that will claim to be accredited by a very official sounding accrediting agency that they have simply created to dub themselves "accredited" to seem more attractive to prospective students. These mal intent institutions usually are fraudulent schools that "award" degrees also known as Diploma Mills.
There are resources to help you determine whether or not the online degree program you are interested in is actually accredited or whether they just claim to be. Listed below are some good resources to check accreditation

Diploma Mills are malicious organizations that award degrees for a price as opposed to an earned education. These shifty institutions can have some very convincing marketing tactics to draw prospective students into believing their claims of legitimacy. However some students know exactly what they are paying for (a.k.a., a quick fix for a degree). Diploma Mills taint the reputations of distance learning institutions and students. By doing this they indirectly hurt the general public. Check into your school of choice carefully to avoid falling prey to a Diploma Mill.
