CAREER ADVISER: Mastering the To-Do List
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
by Amy Lindgren
If your life is hectic right now - think: work-at-home mom - then you are probably a to-do-list type of person. But you may have had to learn your method the hard way.
The problem with these hectic periods is that we sometimes don't adjust our methods to deal with the new reality. So at first, young parents may use the same time management approach that worked for them in their careers - only to discover that babies don't punch a time clock.
Similarly, job seekers who are used to having their days ordered by their jobs can underestimate the importance of building a schedule and to-do list to govern their job searches. In the absence of such a simple tool, searches can run aground for months at a time. This is true whether the seeker is already working or is without employment altogether.
In the first case, the job hunter is likely to find that their job search activities are "out of sight, out of mind" at the end of each day at work. And in the second case, there just isn't enough structure in the seeker's day to help develop good habits. So he or she starts and ends the day with the most obvious, and often most fruitless task, which is to troll around on the Internet searching for openings.
To break this cycle, you need do only one thing: Write down the tasks of a successful job search, assign them to specific days and work through your daily to-do list until each item is checked off the list. Then do it again, over and over until you've met your goal.

SPOTLIGHT: Less Stressful Jobs
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Some of the jobs the Huffington Post ranks as least stressful include becoming a chiropractor, philosopher, or dietician. If you want a cool job, though, here are some more jobs that are low on stress:
- Working at a Ski Resort
Over the winter, lots of ski resorts are hiring, so finding a ski job is not as stressful as it is in other industries. And, although these jobs are usually only temporary, the pay isn't bad, especially if you can teach classes, work on ski patrol, or work in another skilled position. As an added benefit, most ski resorts give their employees free passes for the slopes, so when you're not working, you can de-stress by having some fun on the mountain.
- Government Positions
The amount of stress that comes with working for the government depends on the specific job you choose. Many federal government positions, however, offer job security, awesome benefits packages, travel perks, guaranteed annual bonuses, and scheduled pay raises.
- Tourism Jobs
If you live in a tourist hot spot, choosing a tour guiding job can be a lot of fun, and these jobs are generally low-stress. Now, the hospitality and travel industries can be hard, since you have to deal with grumpy travelers and demanding vacationers, but by the time most people get to the tour guide, they're in a good mood; they're on vacation! If you have a positive attitude, you can have a lot of fun and meet some pretty neat people - plus you don't have to take your work home with you, so any stress you do encounter, you can leave at work.
Of course, having a stress-free job isn't right for everyone. Some people thrive under stress! Stressful jobs can be beneficial, as long as you don't overdo it. Let's take a look at how to control the stress in your life so you have just the right amount.

ADVICE SPOT: Controlling the Stress at Work
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you're like me, a little stress at work might actually be a good thing. Some people do their best work under pressure. Too much stress, though, and you can burn out or even fall ill, so it's important to know your stress limits. Here's how you can control stress in the workplace, even if you have a traditionally stressful job:
- Take your vacation days. It might be tempting to let them accumulate, but everyone needs breaks. So at least once a year, take time off, even if you don't do any traveling. Just get away from work for a week or so.
- Get enough sleep. When we're super stressed out, we tend to not sleep (or to not have restful sleep). Talk to you doctor about natural sleep aids if you need some extra help, and at the very least make sure you go to bed at a decent hour so you get as much rest as possible.
- Stagger your stress. If you've just finished a stressful project, don't immediately jump into a new one. Volunteering to take on more and more tasks will create a constant state of stress, and that's not a good thing for your health. Instead, try to complete less stressful tasks between the more stressful tasks if you can.
If you're finding that your job is too stressful, talk to your boss about ways you can help make the environment or tasks less stressful. You can also consider going back to school to start a new career or even considering work from home opportunities, which might be less stressful on your family.
