CAREER ADVISER: Going to Grad School
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
by Derek Lennon
Are you considering graduate school? Grad school offers highly specialized advanced academic instruction in a variety of fields.
Graduate schools award Master's and Ph.D. degrees. Typically a Master's degree takes 1 to 3 years to complete, while a doctorate degree (Ph.D.) will take 4 to 6 years to finish. This is a huge time commitment and also a costly endeavor. Most grad students graduate with lots of debt (so be sure to look for college financial aid money if you are applying).
Graduate school is not for everyone. It may be wise to attend if you have a clearly defined career path because higher education may help you reach your long-term career goals. Advanced degrees may help you land the job you want, improve your skills, or win you that promotion.
Realize that grad school is not a sure fire way to make more money. It will not guarantee that you are more hirable than someone without an advanced degree. Often real world experience is more useful and resume friendly than grad school.
Ask yourself a few questions before you apply to grad school… Is there a job market for your degree? Are companies hiring? How much debt will you accumulate? How long will it take? Are you ready to take entrance exams? Can you live in the student environment for an extended period of time? Is this something you really want?
Everyone's life goals are different. Be sure you are ready for all that grad school offers before you apply.

ADVICE SPOT: Planning for Retirement
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It's never too early to start saving for retirement. Saving when you are young will pay off when you are older.
Everyone wants to retire with a healthy retirement fund. If you plan ahead, you may be able to retire at a reasonable age. Time Magazine has some great age-related tips on what you need to do to retire comfortably. Calculate how much money you want to have and at what age you want to retire. There are several retirement calculators online that can help you figure this.
Start with a simple saving plan and save when you can. Later invest money wisely so it earns interest and returns that will maximize your retirement fund. There are several types of retirement funds available. In the United States, an IRA or Roth IRA are good options. Consult a financial expert to choose the best one for you.
No one wants financial woes during retirement. So put a few dollars in the bank from each paycheck and let it grow. You'll be happy that you did.
