SPOTLIGHT: HOW TO WORK FROM HOME (Without Getting Scammed)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Working from home sounds appealing, doesn't it? But are the perks as good as they sound? Let's take a look:
- You save money on gas, dry cleaning and lunches out (true).
- You avoid the crush of office politics (maybe, but you also miss out on the socializing that comes with most office jobs).
- You get to lounge around in your PJs (true, in theory, but ask most work-from-homers and they'll tell you that wearing real clothes is much more conducive to productivity).
- You can set your own hours (again, true in theory, but working from home also requires lots of dedication to stay focused on work - even with the myriad distraction of home.)
Do you think you are up to the challenge? Then it's time to starting looking for a job.
The good news is that there are a growing number of full-time and freelance opportunities for home-based workers, thanks in large part to the Internet. The bad news is that you may need to sift through a lot of scams first. Here are three suggestions to avoid being scammed.
1) Educate Yourself
Your can start your research into legitimate work-from-home opportunities at the JobMonkey. We have a comprehensive Working from Home job board and content about data entry jobs, freelance writing jobs, mystery shopping jobs, and online teaching jobs.
2) Trust Your Instincts
If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. You can learn more about potential employers from work-from-home message boards or by checking out the company with your local Better Business Bureau. Even a simple Google search can turn up any unsavory details. And remember: If they are asking you to pay them for the privilege of working there, run - don't walk.
3) Exercise Caution
Working at home means working online...which means applying for jobs online... which means sending out electronic versions of your resume and cover letter. But before you fire off a job app, remember that you don't actually know the person on the receiving end of your email. Exercise caution and remove your home address and other private details from your resume.
Working from home can be an exciting and rewarding adventure. But just like any adventure, it comes with its own set of risks. By educating yourself, trusting your instincts and exercising caution, you can enjoy the adventure of a lifetime!
