SPOTLIGHT: Where to Find Work in Europe
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Whether you are looking for a memorable summer vacation or a lifetime on the "Continent," jobs in Europe an exciting prospect. It can also be a daunting one. Can you work exclusively in English or do you need fluency in another language, too? (Depends on the job and the country you are working in.) Do you need special visas and work permits? (Yes, and here is where you can go to find out more about visas and work permits for Europe.) And what kinds of jobs are available in Europe anyway?
Ireland & the UK
They say the Irish are lucky and that might well be true for Americans going to work in Ireland, too. The greatest opportunities are in tourism and high tech, but the Green Isle also has some of the largest mines in the world where experienced miners are always in high demand.
In the United Kingdom, many Americans find temporary work at pubs or at summer camps. For engineers and marketing gurus, there are a host of opportunities in the IT sector. In fact, a number of these gigs are with American companies, so you might be able to find a job at home and then get transferred over -- a huge benefit, since your company will likely pay all administrative fees and moving costs.
France & Germany
If you want or need to work exclusively in English, both France and Germany have great opportunities for English-speaking au pairs. Germany also has a number of U.S. military bases and American high tech companies, both of which provide opportunities for English speakers.
In France, you can find work for the summer in the southern coast's resort industry. If you are a consultant, keep in mind that France has some of the most favorable laws in the European Union. And what could be better than working for yourself...from Paris?!
Italy, Spain & Greece
These Mediterranean countries are booming in summer months with tourism jobs. If you want to teach English, check out opportunities in Italy and Spain. Just keep in mind that there are visa restrictions to contend with. Au pair jobs are also available in Italy and Spain, and if you get hired through an American company, they will help with all the paperwork.
Eastern Europe
Economies are changing rapidly in Eastern Europe, which means opportunities abound for adventuresome entrepreneurs. The biggest sectors for Americans are high tech jobs and English teaching jobs. Free market consultants can also find exciting opportunities in Eastern Europe, particularly in Poland and Romania.
