CAREER ADVISOR: Impressing Temp Firms
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
by Amy Lindgren
Everyone works for a temporary firm at least once in their career. At least, that's how it seems these days, with permanent jobs looking scarcer. When employers can't commit to a staff position, they turn to short-term workers to relieve the pressure on a building workload. That makes temporary jobs more plentiful than regular positions, and creates a vortex that seems to suck in all the folks who never thought they'd be toting a travel mug from job to job.
If you're new to this game, you'll want some tips for impressing your recruiter at the temporary firm. Otherwise, you run the risk of getting passed over for assignments.
Tip 1. Build a big resume. Unlike other employers, temporary recruiters do need to know everything about you. They especially need to know all the software you can use, all the projects you've managed and all the equipment you've run. They use this information to match you to open positions, so don't hold back.
Tip 2. Stay trained. Throughout your temp career, you should take at least one training class every month. Webinars count, as do short seminars and online software tutorials. The point is to constantly add to your skills and knowledge, and give them more to match.
Tip 3. Be professional. Your recruiter wants to know you'll represent the temp firm well on every assignment. If you demonstrate a good attitude in your dealings with the agency, they'll feel more confident promoting you to their clients.
If you haven't tried it before, you might find that you actually enjoy temping. Keep impressing your recruiters, and at least you'll have the chance to find out.

SPOTLIGHT: The Secrets of Landing a Six Figure Job
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Six figure jobs are hardly a dime a dozen, but with focused attention and dedicated education, they are available -- even in today's economy. Here is a look at some of the fields with the highest paying jobs.
Medical Jobs
You may have to be in school for what seems like forever, but becoming a doctor or dentist will net you a high salary -- with the added bonus of becoming largely recession-proof. Regardless of the economy, people still get sick...and they still need a doctor. While more specialized fields tend to earn higher incomes, many family physicians and pediatricians also make six-figure salaries.
Legal Jobs
There are as many lawyer jokes as there are lawyers, but punch lines aside, legal professionals provide invaluable services to individuals, companies and countries. Plus, law school is only three years -- in comparison to the six plus year route of medical school and residency. In addition to legal eagles, judges and even law professors can also earn top dollars. And, being an appointed judge or a tenured prof means you get to enjoy a high degree of job stability, too.
While medicine and law may be the traditional routes to a high paying career, you still have plenty of other options if blood, guts and contracts don't float your boat, including:
Aviation jobs, which are as varied in salaries as they are in responsibilities. It's true that many pilots struggle in low-paying regional gigs, but seasoned captains of major airlines can earn skies-the-limit salaries. Plus, you don't have to actually fly the friendly skies to earn top dollars at the airlines: Air traffic control officers also earn extremely competitive salaries (the national average tops $107,000 annually).
Petroleum geologist jobs and engineers, which are highly paid, but do require a PhD and the ability to withstand a rather instable industry… at least for the time being.
Finance jobs, which used to be the most obvious bastions of high-earners. Talented money people are still paid sky-high salaries… but an even greater number of talented MBAs have been laid off in the last year. So, if finance is your dream, be prepared for a long haul -- at least over the next several years as the economy gets reestablished.
High-ranking military officer jobs , which can also be extremely well-paid. Plus, top brass earn super pensions and amazing benefits to boost. The drawback? Years of service until you reach that stage. Bottom line: If you aren't selflessly motivated to serve your country, dreaming of a six-figure job in the military is probably not the most logical place to start.
