CAREER ADVISOR: Using Resume Addendum Pages
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

by Amy Lindgren

Have you ever had a really big job, involving so much detail that you could hardly explain it out loud, much less on a resume? This happens a lot to people who manage projects, help roll out products, conduct scientific research ... well, to just about anyone who has a complicated job, to be honest.

When trying to describe a complex work situation on your resume, the solution may be simpler than you think: Rather than trying to condense everything into a bunch of bullet points in your job description, why not expand the information on a separate page?

This extra page, called an addendum, can be used to provide fuller descriptions of your duties in a particular job, or a broader overview of your skills and experience in a specific part of your industry. You can also annex a particular section of your resume to an addendum, such as a publication list or presentations you've given. The idea is to lighten the load on the main resume so the casual reader doesn't bog down in the fine print, while providing the detail later that a more involved reader will want to see.

To make an addendum, simply copy and paste the header from your resume and add the word Addendum in a prominent position. Then organize the information you want to share in a readable, attractive format.

On the resume itself, indicate an addendum is available by stating this at the bottom (i.e., "References, work samples and presentation addendum available upon request"). Or you can simply provide the addendum along with the resume, giving readers the choice of delving more deeply into your experience.

SPOTLIGHT: 6 Reasons to Go Back to School Online
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Are you thinking about going back to school to complete your Bachelor's degree or to start an advanced degree? For busy multitaskers, the perfect school might not be the one in your town -- but rather, the one on your computer. The number of online students has grown 20% since 2002. More than 3.5 Americans are currently enrolled in at least one online class. And those numbers are set to explode in the next decade, especially as would-be job seekers turn to degrees rather than resumes to help them get ahead. If you are considering about elearning, here are 10 great reasons why you should take the leap -- especially during a recession!

1. Protect Your Job.
If you currently have a job that you want to hang on to, elearning is a great way to improve your skills and broaden your educational background -- while never having to take a day off. In just a few weeks, you can learn web design and HTML programming. In a semester or more, you can work toward competency in a foreign language. In two years, you can earn an Executive MBA. Any and all of these experiences will go a long way in making you invaluable to your employee.

2. Increase your earning potential.
Economists estimate that college graduates earn $20,000 a year more than those without a degree. Over a forty-year career, that's a differential of $800,000 -- and that doesn't account for inflation. The salary differential really explodes once you get an advanced degree. The average B.A.-holder earns $51,000 a year, while those with professional degrees (such as JD, MD or PhD) average more than $100,000 a year. Going back to school for an online college degree is a great way to position yourself for a substantial raise in salary.

3. Make yourself more marketable.
While there have been some signs that the recession may be slowing, we are certainly far from out of the woods. Hopefully you will hold on to your job, but if not, earning a degree or certification online is a great way to make yourself more competitive in an increasingly competitive job market.

4. Retrain for a recession-proof career.
If nothing else, this recession has taught us that some jobs are more indispensable than others when times get tough. If you want to change careers to something a bit more recession-proof, an online degree is perfect: You can develop the academic knowledge for your new field, while continuing to work full-time in your old one. When you graduate, you will be ready to hit the ground running. See the JobMonkey blog for a list of the top recession proof careers. Making the cut? Security, health care, nursing and teaching -- all fields with robust opportunities in online learning!

5. Take Advantage of Employer Tuition Benefits
Many companies offer their employees tuition assistance benefits. You can try to get a UPS job, for example, where part-time employees can earn up to $3,000 a year in tuition assistance -- while those working in management can make $4K. (Find out more about the Earn & Learn program from the Financial Aid Finder.) An online degree is the ideal way to take advantage of these sweet benefits: Advance your career on your boss' dime, while still earning your full salary!

6. Save money on transportation.

True, the savings may not be huge, but in a recession, every dollar counts. Going to college online means no costly commutes to college. All you need is a computer with high speed Internet access.
