CAREER ADVISOR: Improve Your Public Speaking Skills
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
by Amy Lindgren
Public speaking has gotten a bad rap over the years. Somehow we got it into our heads that this is a scary thing to do - so much so, that it consistently turns up as the first or second most frightening activities in surveys.
That's too bad, because this skill is also one of the most powerful career builders you can add to your resume. People who can present information to groups can have their pick of careers, from trainer to international consultant to, yes, public speaker.
Not attracted by those job titles? That's okay, but that doesn't mean public speaking wouldn't help you. Suppose you're an accountant and want to be chief financial officer someday. Well, guess what one of the requirements is? Yep, giving presentations - to the management team, to the board of directors ... sometimes even to auditoriums full of shareholders. Gulp.
Okay - so skip the accounting career. Let's put you in the lab running experiments instead. Uh-oh...the boss wants you to explain your research to the funding committee. Double gulp.
You might as well face the facts: There's no way to build any kind of career without learning to present information to groups. Even factory workers do it when they become team leaders or union stewards. If you want to move up in your work at all, you're going to need this skill to do it.
Lucky for you, it's easy to learn. Here are just a few ways to get started: Join Toastmasters. Volunteer to do the readings at your house of worship. Take a class. Teach something at your community center.
See? It's easy. Now get started!

SPOTLIGHT: 4 Ways to Work from Home
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Do you want to be your own boss? Perhaps you need the flexibility to take care of young children while still earning a living? Maybe you want to save money on commuting, eating lunches out, and dry cleaning? Whatever your reason for wanting to work from home, there are a growing number of opportunities for young and older professionals alike looking to telecommute. Here's a look at four of them!
1. Day Trading
It's not exactly risk-free, but for the right person, day trading can be a great way to work from home -- or anywhere in the world. All you need is access to a computer and a high speed Internet connection. And this might surprise you, but you don't need an MBA or even experience in the financial industry to become a day trader.
In the most basic of terms, day trading refers to the buying and selling of financial instruments. But rather than holding onto these instruments long-term, day traders buy and sell over the course of each day in an attempt to "catch" short-term gains. Since 1985, Internet technology has allowed traders to bypass the time-consuming process of executing trades by phone. For nearly 25 years, investors have taken advantage of this technology to maximize trading profits by using rapid transaction -- AKA Day Trading.
While you don't need an MBA to be a day trader, most of those who wager in the stock market are well educated in the areas of investing and economics. Also keep in mind that even the best day traders incur losses, so you will need to be well-funded to attempt day trading, either with your own capital or that of an investor.

2. Online Tutoring Jobs
If you are a teacher, or have a background in education, a great way to earn some extra cash is by online tutoring. One of the easiest ways to get started is through an online tutoring company. A quick Google search should turn up some options in your area -- although the benefit of working online is that you can work from anywhere! Online tutoring companies typically provide you with the software, lesson plans and even the clients.
Some companies take a percentage of your hourly fee, while others charge a flat fee upfront for access to their materials. Be sure that the company you are working with is legitimate before you write that check! Most companies will want you to have some teaching experience, and maybe even a teaching certificate in the subject you wish to tutor.

3. eBay / Etsy Sales
If you are interested in owning your own retail store, a great, low-cost way to get started is online. Some of the most profitable home-based businesses are run entirely off the web, thanks to vendor sites like eBay and, more recently, Etsy. eBay and Etsy sellers typically specialize in one product or industry (from handmade baby clothes to office supplies), which they market and sell online through their eBay or Estsy business.
Selling on eBay is simple and straight-forward: Just open an eBay account, and start uploading your merchandise. You will also need a way to receive payments (Paypal is the most popular option for eBay vendors.) 4. Home Data Entry Jobs
Data Entry is a popular way to earn supplemental income, used most frequently by students and stay-at-home moms. The job is not especially taxing -- it involves sitting for hours at a time, transferring data from different documents onto data entry computer programs.
