CAREER ADVISOR: Volunteering
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
by Amy Lindgren
If you're unemployed right now, you might have more time on your hands than you can fill. You could clean that closet again, or give the dog house another coat of paint. Or you could lend your talents to someone who really needs them, as a volunteer.
For job seekers, there are several "models" of volunteering: You can volunteer skills you already have, to stay relevant in your field. Or, you can volunteer in an organization that will train you in a new skill set, as a way of bridging to another career. Or you can volunteer to do just about anything in an organization you'd like to eventually work for, as a way to get a foot in the door. Or, of course, you can volunteer in order to escape your job search altogether by doing something fun or even mindless for a group whose mission you support.
Whatever style of volunteering you choose, you’ll need to use job search skills to land the position itself.
1. Identify the place or places you want to help out.
2. Call or check their web site to see if they have a volunteer coordinator or a process for taking in new volunteers. If so, follow the instructions provided.
3. In addition to the process for Step 2 above, send a brief letter identifying the role you’d like to take on, your skills for the role and the approximate number of hours you can commit.
4. Follow up. Remember that nonprofits are typically understaffed and may not get back to you; if you really want to be helpful, make it easy for them by staying in touch.

SPOTLIGHT: Use JobMonkey to Find a Cool Job
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
JobMonkey is the best place on the Web to come for career inspiration -- especially if you want more than just a job. For those of you looking for an adventure, JobMonkey has plenty of information to get you started on your journey to the coolest job on Earth. And, did you know that JobMonkey has more than just great job information, it also has great job leads. If you are looking for a new job, here's how to get started:
Register with JobMonkey
The first step to finding the job of your dreams is to register with JobMonkey. You can create a profile and upload your resume to apply directly for the jobs listed on our site. Plus, once you register, employers can find you and be in touch when they have an open position that's a perfect fit. Registering also gives you access to the companies profiled on our website. This detailed information is a great way to research a potential employer. Just click on the "companies" tab at the top of the page once you have logged in.
Search for Jobs
You can search for jobs anytime on the JobMonkey Job Center (although searching once you have registered is better for all the reasons above). The free Job Center has hundreds of job leads representing all of JobMonkey's career fields -- from Alaska fishing jobs to video game jobs, and everything in between. Job openings are updated daily, so be sure to check back frequently.
In addition to our Job Center, JobMonkey also features a growing number of field-specific job boards. Just click on a career field you want to learn more about -- maybe staffing a theme park? becoming a chef? working in law enforcement? Scroll half way down the page and on the left hand navigation menu you will see a link for the job board.
Improve Your Job Search Skills
Applying for jobs through JobMonkey is a great way to increase your chances of landing a job. In this job market, however, you need to do more than just upload your resume and send in a few online applications. You need to actively market yourself, which includes job networking in person and on line. You also need a top-notch resume, a compelling cover letter and stellar interview skills. The JobMonkey's Job Hunting Tools section is a great place to learn more about all of these critical job searching skills.
