CAREER ADVISOR: Sales Careers
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

by Amy Lindgren

"I'll take any job - just not selling. I'm not like that." If I had a nickel for every time I've heard that ... well, I'd have some nickels, anyway. Let's just say it's a pretty common sentiment among those searching for work.

How did sales get such a bad rap, anyway? For some people, it comes from teen jobs they held in department stores or fast food restaurants where they were trained to urge higher-priced items (upselling) on customers. Other folks disdain sales careers after being on the receiving end of such treatment. Apparently being pushy is not a job skill people admire.

That's too bad, since all jobs entail some level of sales. Those who master the skills of persuasion and negotiation can go further in their work than those who simply accept each project or job requirement that comes across their desks. After all, if you don't feel comfortable selling your idea to your boss, how will you get the opportunity to lead that team or create that new product? Better sharpen your sales skills after all.

Sales careers themselves can can be more rewarding than people expect. Even those who believe they won't do well are surprised to find there are methods that fit their personalities. Consultative sales, for example, involves advising clients about their options and helping them solve problems with your products. Relationship sales is based on knowing your customer so well you can anticipate their needs.

Still not convinced? Consider this: Sales people are often the highest paid professionals in an organization, and sales jobs are often the quickest jobs to land. Why not give it a try? Don't overlook the retail jobs section of JobMonkey, which provides an overview of the retail industry.

SPOTLIGHT: 8 Best Reasons to Work for the Federal Government
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Have you ever considered working for the federal government? You probably already know what it's like to work for the private sector, and maybe you even have experience with the nonprofit sector. But do you know all the benefits of a federal career? Check out this list of ten facts and figures about working for the federal government and we think you will be convinced!

1. There are jobs for professionals in just about every field within the federal government. From accountants to zoologists, the federal government has positions in nearly every field and for all career level positions. It is also a great way to blend your skills and training with your interests and passions. Are you a trained computer programmer who is passionate about the environment? Perfect: get an Environmental Protection Agency job in their IT department.

2. The federal government is the nation's largest employer.
The federal government employs more people than any other company, private or public, in the United States. 1.8 million Americans are federal employees -- and that doesn't count the postal service workers! The even better news? Half of those employees will be eligible to retire within the next five years, making for a lot of job openings!

3. The federal government will never go out of business.
All jokes about the current state of the economy aside, you never have to worry about the federal government declaring bankruptcy or just closing up shop one day. When you are a federal government employee, you know you work for a stable, long-term employer who will always be there.

4. The federal government offers great perks.
Primary among them is student loan payoffs. If you work for certain federal agencies for a certain amount of time, you just might find yourself without a student loan payment. And if you decide to pursue a graduate degree, your agency is likely to help pick up the tab in exchange for a commitment to continue working there post-graduation.

5. You can work almost anywhere as an employee of the federal government.
When you hear "federal government," you probably think Washington, D.C. But in reality, less than 20 percent of all government employees work in the nation's capital. There are offices and agencies of the federal government all over the country -- and the world. In fact, more than 50,000 federal employees work abroad.

6. Jobs with the federal government pay well.
While it's true that the private sector out-pays the public sector for certain positions, the average salaries at the federal government are competitive in almost all professional fields. Even better, pay increases are quick, common and well-defined for professionals with advanced education and proven track-records.

7. The federal government offers flexible work schedules.
If you are concerned about your work-life balance, a job with the federal government is a great way to go. Not only do many government employees enjoy flex-time and generous family leave policies, benefit packages -- including health insurance, retirement and vacation time -- are extremely competitive.

8. A job with the federal government looks great on your resume.
Even if you don't want to be a life-long government employee, a short stint at the federal government is a great way to advance your career. You will develop highly marketable skills while working for one of the best known bosses in the free world.
