CAREER ADVISOR: Transferring College Credits
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

by Amy Lindgren

Well, here's something that should be simple but isn't: Transferring credits from one college to another. If you've tried this lately, you already know that it is one part creativity, one part math, and one part prayer and persuasion. When it comes down to the bottom line, there's an individual who will decide what transfers and what doesn't, thus saving or costing you tons of time and money in your pursuit of a degree.

Of course, that person isn't working off the cuff. Every school has fairly strict guidelines, and for good reason: If they give you credit for just any old thing, pretty soon the degree doesn't mean anything in the broader world. Then the school and its graduates - that's you - get saddled with a bad reputation. No thanks.

But there's still plenty of gray area and personal judgment involved in these decisions, particularly when the classes you're transferring took place a number of years ago. Here are a few tips to help you navigate these murky waters.

1. Talk to admissions counselors at more than one school, as some will accept what others reject.

2. Consider taking CLEP exams, which is an inexpensive way of completing general requirements. For more information, go to www.collegeboard.com/testing/.

3. Check around on a web site to see what the equivalency of your credits might be at various schools. One place to start: www.uSelectmn.org.

4. Ask about credits for life experience. You might be able to write a report about your current work or take a test to earn some credits.

5. Keep your sense of humor and repeat frequently: School is fun, school is fun.

SPOTLIGHT: How to Land a Job After the Recession
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The recession may not be over yet, but economic indicators point toward a turn-around by this winter, if not sooner. For anyone who has been laid off or unemployed during the recession, the promise of job growth is good news indeed. According to a recent article in Business Week, if you want to jump on the job growth bandwagon, try marketing yourself for a position in one of four fields:

Health care
Education
Government
Green Business

Not only do these fields represent the jobs of the future, they have also been some of the most stable sectors over the past year of record-high job layoffs. Here are some tips for landing a job in one of these four fields:

Healthcare

- 3 million new jobs will be added annually over the next 6-10 years, including hundreds of thousands of nursing jobs

- If you are interested in nursing, but do not have your RN yet, consider going to nursing school. Not sure which nursing program is right for you? Check out the JobMonkey's tips for picking a nursing school.

- You do not have to be a doctor or nurse to work in health care. Individuals with business degrees, social work degrees, and technical degrees are all in high demand, too.

- Rather than re-schooling, consider an internship or volunteer position with a hospital to boost your professional credibility for a non-medical position.

Education

- The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, also know as the Stimulus Bill, is set to rescue drowning-in-debt school districts with an infusion of $90 billion for education. Over half those funds will go directly to local districts.

- The highest demand will be for teachers of science, math and English as a second language (ESL). Salaries probably will not be in the six-figures, but good benefits and free summers make teaching a very attractive career.

- Learn more about educational requirements for ESL teachers from the JobMonkey, including certification and training programs.

Green Collar Jobs

- The single fastest growing job sector in the United States, the green collar industry is expected to grow by more than 50% by 2016. Fueling this explosion is the billions in federal dollars being pumped into renewable energy, research and efficiency.

- Internships are apprenticeships are a great way to get your start in the green sector.

- A growing number of colleges and universities are offering degrees in sustainable development -- check out this list of green degree programs from the JobMonkey.

Federal Government Jobs

- Long since a bastion of job security, the federal government is set to grow its ranks by more than 200,000 over the next 6-10 years with a major infusion of funding from the Obama Job Stimulus Plan

- Topping the list for new employees are the Social Security Administration, the Veterans Affairs Department, Environmental Protection Agency, and the Defense Department

- The Federal Government employs 900 different occupations -- so surely you can find a job that is right for you with so many to professions to choose from!

- The keys to finding a Federal Government job include networking and internships.

JobMonkey is a trove of reliable information about all four of these hot jobs of the future, so steer your job search onto the fast track by spending some time perusing our articles.
