CAREER ADVISOR: Preparing Your Job References
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

by Amy Lindgren

Here's something to worry about in your job search: Well-meaning references who unwittingly torpedo your candidacy for good positions. Yikes!

It's not that your job references don't want you to succeed - they wouldn't have agreed to be references if that were the case. The real problem is that calls from employers come unexpectedly and your reference may be providing the same favor to more than one person. It's like getting a pop quiz when you don't even know the subject of the class.

To give your references a hand, and to ensure the best outcome, try sending an email like this:

Dear ______,

Thanks again for agreeing to be a reference as I apply for jobs as a _______. It's great to have your support as I move forward in my career.

I plan to send you short updates when I have interviews, so you will know more about those jobs in advance. But in the meantime, I thought of some general points I thought you might consider discussing, if it seems appropriate.

Since most of the jobs I'm seeking are about project management, it might be relevant to mention the Jackson account we worked on together and the project management steps I handled for the software conversion. Also, most of the jobs I'm applying for involve a lot of teamwork and deadline management. If you feel comfortable saying anything about my strengths in those areas, that would be great.

Thanks again for being my reference. I'll update you as things progress. Sincerely,

~~~~~
This isn't pushy, by the way - it's the hallmark of someone who takes care of details and respects other people.
Do you love to travel? Does seeing the country seem like a great job benefit to you? If you would like to take to the friendly skies -- or railways and highways -- read on to learn more about jobs in the airline, railroad and auto shipping industry.
Airline & Aviation Jobs - Can you imagine a job where you start your day in Paris and end it in China? Or the Caribbean? Working for the airline industry can definitely be a fun adventure. Besides free travel (for you and your family), airline employment offers a host of benefits such as a flexible schedule and excellent pay.
While being a pilot or flight attendant is the most high profile way to fly the friendly skies, airlines offer a number of exciting "behind-the-scenes" positions -- both in the air and on the ground. These support positions range from cargo handler and mechanic to customer service representative.
Learn about airline and airport job salaries, benefits, educational requirements and more from the JobMonkey. Once you are ready to look for an airline job, check out our content partner, the Airline Job Finder -- a great place to post your profile and resume for airline and aviation employers to review when recruiting for open job positions.
Driveaway Jobs - The auto shipping industry is a diverse field, including auto and RV transport, military vehicle shipping, and truck driving jobs. While many of these jobs can be found at large trucking companies with fleets of trucks, there are opportunities for entrepreneurs to work independently as well.
If you are interested in learning more about dispatch, driver, delivery and repair jobs in the auto shipping industry, the Job Monkey is a great place to start.  When you are ready to start your job search, be sure to check out our Driveaway Jobs Board.
Railroad Jobs Overview - Have you ever wondered what it's like to work on a railroad?  From hauling coal and cargo to transporting travelers across town -- or across the country, railroads are an essential part of America's transportation network. There are a number of great opportunities within the railroad industry -- from engineers and conductors to ticket takers and dining car workers to cargo handlers and repair workers.
