CAREER ADVISOR: Attending Conferences
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
by Amy Lindgren
I went to a conference recently and stumbled upon several job openings. Not just one or two, but actually quite a few, mostly unadvertised. One came from a session where a department manager from a major corporation said that he was scouting talent. Another series of openings was noted on a cardboard sign at one of the exhibitors' booths. And still more job leads came from a casual conversation with a woman who is currently hiring contract workers for long-term assignments.
Wow, wow, wow. What a great reminder that jobs are still open, and that employers are hiding for a reason. In a word, crowd control. By coming to the conference to find potential candidates, they were limiting the hassle factor of sorting resumes, or of developing a customized screening tool for an online sorting process. More importantly, they were getting the opportunity to watch candidates in action, and to identify their commitment to the field through their effort to stay on top of trends at the conference.
If this sounds like a good tool to use in your job search, you'll need to use your thinking cap. Start by identifying key topics or professions and running an online search for upcoming sessions. Next, contact the conference hosts to see if you can exchange your volunteer assistance for an entry ticket. Not everyone will be amenable, but someone will, so keep at it. Finally, you'll need a plan for getting the most out of the conference. This could include conversations with the exhibitors, sponsors and presenters, as well as with fellow participants. Research and preparation will make a difference, so give yourself time to plan.
And finally...this is somewhat of a tangent...but have you ever considered becoming the person who puts on a conference? Learn about event management jobs in our Event Jobs section! There's money to be made.
