CAREER ADVISOR: Career Development Month
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

by Amy Lindgren

November is Career Development Month. Although it's not a Hallmark holiday, and it's not as showy as, say, Christmas, it's a pretty good commemoration for an activity we spend about a third of our lives pursuing. If you don't have plans for this great event, and I'm guessing you don't, let me provide some ideas so you can give this holiday its due.

1. Review your work life so far. What has been enjoyable, what has been educational, and what could you have skipped altogether? Capture your answers before hitting the next step.

2. Consider your dreams and goals. Which ones have you met, and which ones are in process? Of the dreams not yet met, which ones have you outgrown? These can be tossed aside. Now, which dreams and goals are still on the to-do list that you'd like to achieve?

3. Look at your work situation. Are you working now? If so, is your current job helping you achieve your goals and dreams, or is it interfering? For example, if your goal is to finish a degree but your work keeps you on the road, it may be the wrong job for this goal.

4. If a change is needed, make a plan. If you are seeking work, or if your work is not helping you reach your dreams, now is the time to make an adjustment. This may be as simple as choosing a new job related to your goals or as complicated as reinventing yourself and breaking bad career habits. Whichever it is, it will be worth the effort and November is as good a time as any to get started.

SPOTLIGHT: Sports Careers
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you are a sports junkie, you might be excited to know that it doesn't just have to be your weekend hobby. You can turn your knowledge and passion for sports into a full-time profession, and you don't even have to know how to slam dunk a basketball! Here are four great ways to earn a living while doing what you love:

Sports Journalists cover the world of sports. Many newspaper reporters start off specializing in a specific sport within a smaller market -- usually high school sports for a small to medium-size town. Eventually they can work their way up to covering professional teams and traveling with them around the country and even the world. Broadcast journalists also start out doing local coverage most of the time, before making the jump to the national news.

Health and Fitness Careers are broadly defined as those that work with teams or the general public to promote health and fitness within athletics. Specific jobs can include athletic trainers, sports massage therapists, sports physicians, and sports psychologists. Most of the careers require advanced degrees plus internship experience. Massage therapists and athletic trainers may sidestep the higher-ed route for a certificate and lots of supervised experience.

What does a high school sports coach job entail exactly? High school coaches are part-teacher, part-drill sergeant. Not only do they teach youngsters the fundamentals of the game, they also help them to develop physically, socially, morally, emotionally and spiritually. Other responsibilities include improving athletes' overall health, fitness and coordination; and offering them opportunities to experience group interaction, motivation, and play principles. Many coaches get their start as high school PE teachers and team coaches. From there, they can move into college coaching -- and some even advance to pro teams. You can take the profession for a test-run by volunteering to coach a middle school team or a little league team.

Stadium Operations Jobs are one of the best ways to experience the thrill of sports. And did you know that the head of operations at a stadium or sports facility often nets six-figures?! Also look into high paying jobs in operations, such as event coordinator, equipment manager, scoreboard operator, and public address announcer. In addition to requiring a college degree, many stadium operations jobs want candidates with past work experience. If you have none, consider interning at a sports facility while you're in college to get your foot in the door.
