School Nurses
School nurses are paid slightly below average for an RN, but school nurses are often on a 9 month schedule and are off by mid-afternoon, making it a perfect opportunity for moms and dads who have children at home.
While bandaids and evaluating the "I hate gym class" headache are still common responsibilities, the primary focus of a school nurse is to promote learning. This is accomplished by working to protect student and staff safety and health. Typical tasks might include providing injury or illness assessments, medication administration, assisting in crisis intervention and facilitating health education efforts.
Some of the advantages of being a school nurse include the ideal schedule, you're making a positive difference in the lives of young people, and there's variety from day to day.
The tough part of being a school nurse is that some parents are difficult to deal with and you have to contend with public sector red tape including complicated regulations.
You're most likely to be successful if you have an ongoing willingness to learn and familiarize yourself with both pediatric nursing and mental health nursing. For this type of nursing job you also need patience with both children and bureaucracy; strong communication skills; and, strong assessment skills.
