Private Sector Outdoor Volunteer Jobs
Non-government agencies can include private companies as well as non-profit agencies. Like their governmental counterparts, these groups also may run under very tight restraints, leading them to rely heavily upon public support and private funding.
As such, their volunteer labor force is a tremendous resource. In recent years many non-profit organizations have heavily recruited volunteer labor to offset loss of federal support. Evidence has shown that the volume of volunteer labor is not only growing, but is growing faster than the paid labor force in non-profit industries.
Because governmental agencies are sometimes under various political pressures, non-government enterprises can serve important social aims, which the larger government cannot. And many non-government agencies are more specific than governmental agencies, targeting one realm of the environment, rather than a broad, nationwide approach. As a volunteer you will not only gather hands-on outdoor experience, you'll also be examining some of the most pressing environmental issues of our time. Remember, non-government volunteer positions can lead to paid work later down the road.
While there are hundreds of local, state, and national environmental organizations to be found, we've included further information on the three groups that work in close conjunction with government employees and forestry professionals, thus giving you more opportunities to network and possibly find a paying position. The non-government volunteer programs listed in our manual are as follows:
