Park Concessions Job Outlook
As private companies, concessioners hire their own employees using completely separate guidelines from those of the federal government. This means two things to the job hunter.
First, getting a job with a concessioner tends to be much easier than getting hired by the government. Not only is the competition less fierce, but the hiring process is not restricted by federal employment guidelines, so there are fewer standard employment deadlines or requirements.
Second, concession jobs usually don't pay as well as government jobs. Many concession employees receive lower hourly wages, but get a bonus at the end of the season. Workers with certain skills (tour escort experience or a bus driver's license, for example) get a little more money. On a positive note, many concession companies subsidize or partially subsidize their employees' food and lodging, which partially makes up for the lower pay.
