Passport in Time Volunteer Program
Another volunteer opportunity of the U.S. Forest Service is the Passport in Time program (PIT). PIT is a volunteer archaeology and historic preservation program of the USDA Forest Service.
They invite individuals to work with professional archaeologists and historians on projects including archaeological excavation, rock art restoration, survey, archival research, historic structure restoration, gathering oral histories, or writing interpretive brochures.
Because PIT is a volunteer program, there is no fee to participate. However you do need to get yourself to the project and sometimes provide your own food and lodging. Many of the projects involve backcountry camping where volunteers are responsible for their own food and gear.
Application Procedures
The length of duty can range from a few days to a couple of weeks or longer. Visit the website below to find out more details and to see a list of available projects.
