Types of Outdoor State Agency Jobs
State departments of forestry, parks, ecology, agriculture, water quality, and others hire countless seasonal workers to perform the same types of duties that federal agencies need. As a state employee you might spend the summer working as a forestry aide, lifeguard, park ranger, biology technician, or laborer.
You'll get your hands dirty gaining new skills, enabling you to upgrade to a higher position with the same agency, transfer to another agency, or get on with a federal employer like the National Park Service.
State jobs also are ideal for those who are unsure about moving halfway across the country for a job. Because every state offers some type of seasonal outdoor employment, it's likely you'll be able to find a rewarding position in your own backyard, in a neighboring state, or in a part of the country you've always wanted to visit. There are plenty of opportunities for a wide range of locations and positions, and you can pick and choose where you want to work, keeping in mind competition, location, and what types of jobs are available where.
