Other opportunities exist for those who would like to work in the outdoors. Even if you don't find paid employment (perhaps because you missed the application filing deadline or the position you were interested in was filled by a returning employee) you may still find yourself working under a blue sky amid a pine grove. Volunteering is one of the best ways to get a foot in the woods, so to speak. We address the various outdoor volunteer programs in detail later in the manual, including the very popular National Forest Volunteer Program. It's definitely worth your time to consider this as an alternative way to get valuable experience.
