The Importance of Railways

Railways have been an important means for transporting materials - and people - for well over a hundred years.

In North America it's a common sight to see dozens or even hundreds of rail cars moving along the thousands of miles of track in both urban and rural areas. Some countries like India, use the rails not only as a way to move freight between very remote locations but also as a free mode of transport for hundreds of people who climb aboard and sit in, hang on and ride on top of the cars.

It's pretty amazing that there aren't more railway related deaths in India, once you have a look at some of the pictures that show the people hanging on the outside of the cars by one hand or sitting with hundreds of others atop the rail cars. From steam locomotives that helped to carry people and materials during the settlement of America, all the way up to the bullet trains that zip passengers across vast distances in China and Japan, the basic design of railways have pretty much stayed the same. Powerful engines are used to draw cars along steel rails taking on freight and passengers and delivering them from one point to the next, then refueling and doing it all over again.

In many countries including the United States, Canada, and Japan, the railways are used for sight-seeing tours of the country, with many tourists spending their whole vacation on a train. This is a great way to get to know a country as the rails generally take you through areas that you'd miss in a car or tour bus.
