Getting Hired as a Massage Therapist
Apart from having training as a massage therapist, there are a few qualities that will help you get a job. Most important is the ability to work with a wide variety of personality types and help them feel good. Along with skill in giving massages, employers will be looking for empathy and a gentle nature.
A placement director for a prominent school of massage says he has no problem placing graduates because there is a high demand for them:
"It's neat to see that people are starting to look at massage therapy as being more than just feeling good - it's actually therapeutic."
He says that especially in resort settings, employers are looking for massage therapists with similar interests to those of their guests. This means your application will go further if you are interested in sports and the outdoors yourself:
"Resorts also look for someone who can relate to their customers. If it's a resort in Colorado and the massage therapist has lived and skied there all his or her life, they're going to be able to relate to the client."
Finally, getting hired by a resort can be as simple as proving yourself with your hands, as one insider describes:
"I went down to Hyatt Regency on St. John in the Virgin Islands and got interviewed. The woman gave me an interview, I gave her a massage, and she hired me on the spot."
