On-the-Job: Scuba Instructor Interview

Grace Ann Mulhollan spent a summer working as a SCUBA instructor at Club Med in Cancun.

I got into SCUBA diving as a little kid, because my parents were divers.

I was a dive master for a couple years, then I took the instructor exam. At Club Med contracts last six months, then you are moved to a new resort. So it's a great way to see the world if you stick with it. If I had stayed on I would have been transferred to Turks and Caicos Islands in the Caribbean. A friend of mine was transferred to the Philippines. You get to meet people from all over the world.

Diving is awesome. It's my passion. There is a whole world under there that even by snorkeling you could never see. What I enjoy most is seeing someone's face light up when they see something cool for the first time. Everyone can do it, even people who are not healthy enough to ski or jog. Also, no two dives are ever the same, even at the same site.

My typical day involved getting up at six in the morning, having breakfast with the guests, then heading down to the dock to get set up for the morning dives. We would do two dives each morning and we took out a full boat - that's 120 people - every time. Between dives we had to quickly clean up, reload the tanks, and set up for the next group.

After the morning dives we'd have an hour-long lunch break, and because we were twenty minutes from the main resort we used that time to just hang out on the beach. In the afternoon we taught lessons. People who sign up to take lessons get five sessions during their stay. You start out by just talking to them on land. After that you moved to a contained area. Finally, the fifth lesson is a full-scale dive, after which students get a certificate that they can use to dive at any Club Med.

Lessons ended at half past five and dinner is at seven, so we'd have to quickly get back to the main resort, get showered, and head down to dinner with the guests. After dinner comes dancing, a cocktail party, and a disco, which we were required to attend for at least half an hour. It goes without saying that there were some pretty late nights.

If you're thinking about getting a job as a SCUBA instructor, I'd say go for it.

You'll get a chance to do a lot of diving and meet a lot of people. This falls under the category of first figuring out what you love to do and then how you can make money at it, instead of the other way around.

I have some great memories of my time as a diving instructor at Club Med. If I were twenty years old again I would do it in a minute. It was a great experience and I loved it. You're living in paradise. I could walk out my sliding glass door onto the Caribbean beach, and not many people can say that. It is a fun atmosphere. Everyone is always happy, and there are lots of young people. When I was there I was constantly thinking, "This is the life - this is killer."
