Hunter Ski Area Profile

Hunter Ski Resort consists of three mountains: Hunter One, Hunter Mountain, and Hunter West. It is the closest major ski resort to New York City. You'll find smiling people from all walks of life working in the area, as well as wonderfully prompt service.

Winter Activities

The three spectacular mountains at Hunter are proudly covered by fresh powder made by an extensive snowmaking system. Skiing has been available at Hunter since 1959 and consists of forty-seven trails and slopes. Providing for all types of skiers, Hunter has a variety of expert, intermediate, and beginner slopes. Skiers can definitely be challenged at Hunter. This is the home of the longest and highest chairlift in the East, called the Hunter Mountain Skyride.

Skiing is basically the only outdoor activity during the winter months; however, the excellent bookstores and other shops in town are great for exploration.

Summer Activities

Hunter is known for its many summer festivals, featuring food, fun, drink, and wonderful entertainment. The following are held on various dates throughout the summer:

  • German Alps, July 1-17 (closed July 11)
  • Mountain Eagle Indian Festival, September 3-5
  • Hunter Country Music Festival, July 21-August 1
  • Mountain Bike National Championship Series, July 30-August 1
  • Rockstalgia, August 5-7
  • Celtic Festival, August 19-21
  • Hunter Country Music Festival Encore, August 10-14

For locations and times, call Festival Information at (518) 263-3800.

Après-ski

As far as nightlife goes, there is dancing and after-hours drinking at Tequila's Tex-Mex. Other options include The Restaurant, a pizza and sushi bar, a deli, and a food court that can satisfy any food craving. Visit the ski museum as well as The Gallery, where local artists display and sell their artwork.

Transportation

Hunter is one of the closest ski areas to New York City, only a two-and-a-half hour drive north. Driving access is from the New York Thruway (I-87). To Hunter take Exit 20 at Saugerties and follow Route 32 to 32A to Route 23A. The closest airport to this ski area is Albany County, one hour north; it is served by major airlines. Transportation from all nearby airports is available from CTI Shuttle, (800) 843-6673. In addition, you can use the Mt. Skier Express, (516) 462-6262, that runs between Long Island and Hunter.

Housing

Some employers will assist their employees in locating housing. In any case, it is always a good idea to look over the real estate section of the paper and contact a rental agency for rates and availability.

Hunter Ski Area Employment

The majority of hiring takes place before mid-October. Read the following listing for details on employment with Hunter Mountain and the Hunter Mountain Festivals.
