Okemo Ski Resort Area Profile

Okemo, in Vermont, is known for its massive snowmaking and grooming efforts, as well as its aggressive expansion over the past ten years. Snowmaking blankets nearly the entire mountain, and that technique saved Okemo's hide last winter when a January thaw kept skiers off other mountains in the area. Recently new trails have been cut, new snowmaking equipment has been brought in, and old lifts have been replaced. Last summer a new high-speed quad was installed and this summer another new lift is on the drawing board. Next on the agenda: a newly developed area with condos, townhouses, and chairlifts.

Winter Activities

Okemo boasts 2,150 vertical feet of ski territory in a mix of novice, intermediate, and expert slopes. Snowmaking machines keep the mountain blanketed in snow.

Other winter activities include snowmobiling, snowboarding - there's a half-pipe and a park - and cross-country skiing at an off-site golf course near the resort.

Summer Activities

Nearby Fox Run golf course provides ample territory for teeing off, and mountain biking, hiking, and cycling opportunities are abundant throughout the area. A paved road goes to the top of the mountain, so visitors can drive their bicycles to the summit for an exhilarating ride to the bottom.

Après-ski

Okemo is unique for the area in that it has a town right at its base. Ludlow is the center for nightlife on the mountain, and the local ski bum hangout seems to change from year to year.

Transportation

Located in south-central Vermont between Rutland and Springfield, Okemo is easily accessible to travelers via Route 103 (east-west) or Route 100 (north-south). Travelers to Okemo can use Rutland Regional Airport, one hour north of the resort via Route 103. Colga Airlines provides commuter service and connecting flights to Boston and Newark. Bus service is available from Vermont Transit, (802) 773-2774, from the airport to the resort.

A shuttle bus operates between the resort and the town of Ludlow on a peak-hour and weekend basis. Otherwise, Ludlow is just a stone's throw away, and hitchhiking should be easy.

Housing

Though the resort itself does not provide its employees with housing, it does help them find a place to live. There is a very large bed base in the area, and the company puts together lists of available housing. There are also several realtors in the area with low-cost housing options.

Okema Ski Area Employment

The resort hosts a job fair in October; this is the best time to get a job. Applicants are urged to call the resort in August to get put on a mailing list for hiring information. Part-time jobs are also available.
