Working in Resort Operations and Support Jobs

The bulk of job opportunities at ski areas are the many positions vital to day-to-day operations.

These include ticket sales, waitressing, housekeeping, lift operation, and other similar jobs found at every resort. For the most part they are not glamorous or high-paying positions. But they do provide a way to live and work at a ski resort, and many include a season pass as part of the employee benefits. The biggest advantage for the newcomer is that there are usually plenty of jobs available, most of them requiring no experience.

Job Outlook For Operations And Support Jobs

With nearly 800 ski areas operating in the United States and Canada, winter recreation as an industry is booming. With so much competition, individual ski resorts are under increasing pressure to provide more and better runs, faster lifts, shorter waits, finer dining, and full-service hospitality.

Because of the seasonal nature of the business and the fact that many ski area jobs require minimal skills, there is a great deal of annual turnover. Areas work hard at recruiting quality personnel but will always have a problem with retention. Certain companies have tried to enhance staff satisfaction by providing decent employee housing. Resorts that typically have the greatest turnover are those that have poor or no employee housing.

For those who aren't certified snowboard technicians or trained ski coaches, there is a wide variety of jobs available at ski areas of all sizes. Read the next page for descriptions of specific positions.
