Schweitzer Mountain Area Profile

Schweitzer is the second largest ski area in Idaho (Sun Valley being the largest ), and was recently picked by Snow Country magazine as "The West's Hot New Resort." Despite the recognition, Schweitzer still boasts that it has no lift lines and a friendly atmosphere. The nearest town to Schweitzer is the lakeside village of Sandpoint, just eight miles from the ski mountain, which provides a family-oriented atmosphere. Idaho's top ski hotel, the Green Gables Lodge, is located at Schweitzer. In addition, there are many condos circling the slope area for great ski-in/ski-out convenience.

Winter Activities

Most skiers find that the mountain is somewhat underrated for both beauty and challenging runs. The views at the top of the ski lift encompass Lake Pend Oreille, Idaho's largest lake, and the vast countryside. The mountain has a 2,400-vertical-foot drop with forty-eight trails, and 2,350 skiable acres in all. The trails are marked 20 percent beginner, 40 percent advanced, and 40 percent expert. There are also thirty acres set side for night skiing. In addition to skiing, there are opportunities to explore the area by snowmobile or on a sleigh ride.

Summer Activities

Summer activities in this part of Idaho include hiking, biking, and whitewater rafting on the Moyie and St. Joe Rivers.

Concerts and mystery theater take place on the green slopes starting in June. The Festival at Sandpoint, the acclaimed music fest held in late July and early August, attracts national acts performing blues, rock, jazz, and country music.

Après-ski

Restaurants are found mostly in Sandpoint, as are the bars other than those at the hotels. A few restaurants and bars ring the lake for several miles.

Transportation

Although this resort is fairly large, transportation is limited. Most locals and visitors recommend bringing your own car, since there is a lot to explore in the vicinity.

Housing

Most employees in this area must find their own apartments. The classified section of the local paper and area realtors are good sources for rates and availability.

Schweitzer Mountain Ski Area Employment

The resort employs a total of 500 people, including 200 winter and seventy-five summer hires. Applicants are encouraged to send all employment information by October. Read the following company listing for details.
