Outlook for Snowboard and Ski Shop Jobs
A ski shop job can be great seasonal work, particularly for a college student who goes to school near a ski resort. Ski shop employees need to have a good grasp of the technical side of ski and board gear and clothing.
They have to field questions like, "How's the snow going to be tomorrow?"
The biggest current growth in ski retail is in snowboarding, and many ski shops have not yet added personnel who know the snowboarding side of the sport.
One shop worker explains:
"The increase in snowboarding is perking up the industry. It requires just as much stuff, its gear and clothing are just as technical, and snowboards need stone grinding just like skis."
Ski shop jobs are fairly competitive, especially at on-mountain resorts. If people love the sport and want to work in the industry, they want to be on the mountain. While the hours worked at a resort shop may not differ from those at a city shop - nights and weekends - at least the lifts are closer.
New employees in a snowboard and ski shop may get from minimum wage to $12 per hour, depending on experience. Shop managers can expect between $12 and $16, depending on the number of employees they supervise and the store's location.
