Ski Resort Jobs: What's the Best time to Go?
Timing is everything in the race for finding jobs and housing at ski resorts. The earlier you can get to a resort the better; some ski bums with plenty of time on their hands recommend moving to the area as early as summer to find a place to live, land the ideal job, and get acquainted with the town and its residents.
A waiter at a ski resort stresses that it takes time to settle into a new place:
"I would say getting there a couple of weeks ahead of time is the very minimum you'd want to do. The job part usually isn't too hard; the housing can be a big struggle. A lot of times it can be a month or two before you can find a place."
Many ski bums work construction jobs in the summer. You might try to get a similar position as a way of getting settled in town and saving some money before ski season begins.
It's also important to consider how long you are planning to stay in a ski town. The turnover rate on employment at ski areas is quite high. If you plan on moving to a ski resort at the beginning of the season and leaving halfway through, it would be wise to keep it to yourself when going in for an interview. Ski area employers are looking for people who will stay for the whole winter and they may not be eager to hire someone who will leave at the peak of the season.
