Windham Ski Area Profile

The town of Windham lies just one mile from Ski Windham, a family-oriented ski resort which is the closest ski area to New York City. The area is extremely popular among New York City residents, who visit throughout the year to enjoy a variety of recreational opportunities.

Winter Activities

Ski Windham offers thirty-three diverse trails to skiers of all abilities and the same vertical drop as Hunter Mountain, its neighbor to the south.

The resort caters to families and offers a friendly atmosphere with New England-style charm. Ski Windham offers a respectable vertical drop of 1,600 feet and 25 percent advanced terrain. Snowboarding is available on all trails and the snowboard park. Extensive snowmaking equipment ensures reliable ski conditions.

Though not available at the resort, the nearby area offers snowmobiling and excellent cross-country skiing, as well as a variety of indoor activities like tennis and swimming.

Summer Activities

Windham is just as popular in summer as in winter, with hiking and golfing heading the list of activities. The ski resort is in Northern Catskill State Park and offers tremendous wilderness hikes and panoramic views. Thousands of New Yorkers visit and stay in the numerous lodges, hotels, and bed-and-breakfasts in the area. Fall foliage is a major attraction in September and October, and hunters frequent the area in season.

Après-ski

The town of Windham is only one mile from the ski resort and is best known for its outstanding restaurants. Those looking for some nightlife can choose from a couple of local hot spots or check out the clubs in the town of Hunter, just seven miles away.

Transportation

Windham is the closest ski area to New York City, only a two-and-a-half hour drive north. Driving access is from the New York Thruway (I-87). Take Exit 21 off the New York Thruway onto Route 23 and follow it west for twenty-five miles to the resort town. The closest airport to this ski area is Albany County Airport, one hour north; it is served by most major airlines. Transportation from all nearby airports is available from CTI Shuttle, (800) 843-6673. In addition you can use Adirondack Trailways which has pick-up and drop-off service on Main Street in Windham.

Housing

Rent is reasonable in Windham, at least by New York standards, and a number of rental properties are usually available in both apartment buildings and houses.

Windham Ski Area Employment

Most jobs in the Windham area are with the ski resort or various lodging establishments and resort complexes. As in many Eastern ski towns, locals must contend with relatively low salaries.
