Park City Area Profile

Utah license plates proudly proclaim, “Greatest Snow on Earth.” If so, then one of the best places to cut into it is at Park City, Utah’s largest ski resort area. The rest of the world seems to agree: the area hosted the 2002 Winter Olympics. If Park City is crowded, then Deer Valley and The Canyons are just minutes away and five other resorts are within an hour’s drive. Park City is home to three resorts, Park City Ski Area, Deer Valley Resort, and The Canyons. The town is situated along the base of the ski mountain and is completely self-contained (Salt Lake City is forty minutes to the west). The town has a colorful past, as it was once home to twenty-four millionaires who made their fortunes during the silver mining boom of the 1870s. Today the town carefully preserves the rich history and charm of the late nineteenth century. In fact, the entire Main Street district is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Winter Activities

Variety is the key word at Park City Ski Area. A good mix of beginner, intermediate, and expert ski runs suits all tastes and abilities. The mountain has a 3,100-foot vertical drop and 2,200 skiable acres. In addition, there are opportunities to heli-ski and cross-country ski deep in the heart of the Wasatch Mountains surrounding Park City. There is no snowboarding at Deer valley, but Park City Mountain Resort and The Canyons offer outstanding snowboarding.

One of the many major winter events at Park City is a kickoff to the ski season as host to the start of the World’s Cup, “America’s Opening, ” held over Thanksgiving weekend each year at the Park City Ski Area. This ski-race extravaganza features parades, concerts, fireworks, dances, and general celebration. The Winter Olympics were held in Salt Lake City in 2002.

During the third week of January the Sundance Film Festival, featuring the works of independent filmmakers is held. This festival attracts celebrities from Hollywood and around the world for a week of great movies, outrageous parties and fun on the slopes. In February, the Coca-Cola snow-sculpting contest and Winterfest keep the atmosphere festive. Other activities in winter include hot-air ballooning, ice skating, and snowmobiling. Concerts, plays, and art shows are continually scheduled, and the area has full athletic facilities. Check out a full list of Park City Events and Festivals.

Summer Activities

Park City is a four-season resort, so there are many summer activities, both scheduled and unplanned. The Summer Concert Series begins in June and a Chamber Music Festival is held in July. The Utah Symphony performs outdoors at Deer Valley Resort. There are always opportunities to hike, ride down the mountain on an alpine slide, bungee jump, take a hot-air balloon ride, or mountain bike at lift-served facilities. Close to Park City, outdoor enthusiasts can waterski, fish, sailboard, and swim in the cool, clear reservoirs or explore the Timpanogos Cave National Monument and the Uinta Mountains on horseback. Call the Utah Division of Parks and Recreation at (801) 538-7220 for more information.

Après-ski

Park City has about a dozen bars and clubs, and six liquor stores. Some private clubs charge a membership fee of $5 which is valid for up to two weeks (you may need this in order to buy alcohol of any kind). Bars primarily serve beer and wine coolers, and most restaurants only have liquor available to those eating a meal. Despite these rules, Park City has a reputation for the wildest nightlife of any ski area, perhaps because of the rebellious streak of the locals or the masses of singles and college students who flock there. At the Wasatch Brew Pub, (435) 645-9500, visitors can witness the brewing process before ordering a cool one. The Irish Camel, (435) 649-6645, has good drinks and great Tex-Mex food. There are many choices for dancing, notably The Club, with its velvet-lined bordello dance floor and multitude of mingling singles. The Alamo, home to the local rugby club, has live music throughout the year. Most restaurants are located on Main Street in the historic district. There are over seventy restaurants for cheap eats as well as formal dining.

Transportation

Park City is one of the most accessible ski areas from anywhere in the country. It is located thirty-seven miles from Salt Lake City International Airport which is served by over 300 daily flights offered by major airlines such as Delta, American, US Air, Continental, Southwest, Northwest, and United. At the airport, there is a choice between rental cars, taxis, and shuttle services. The bus system in and around town, Park City Transit, is free to the public.

It is very easy to get around Park City because of the free city-wide bus system running every fifteen minutes seven days per week. It runs from the base of the slopes to the lodges and town. Call Park City Transit, (801) 649-6660, for more information.

This area has become increasingly popular during the last several years, so it is best to locate housing months before the ski season.
