Area Profile

Silver Star Mountain is located in the heart of the Okanagans of British Columbia and attracts visitors year-round. The mountain is a twenty-minute drive from the resort town of Vernon, which is situated between two lakes, Okanagan Lake to the south and Kalamalka Lake, known for its beautiful turquoise color, to the north. Silver Star is known for its Victorian-themed ski village with its vibrant facades and old-fashioned boardwalks. The village has four hotels and three condominium complexes which are open both summer and winter. The area is a favorite destination for Vancouver residents who enjoy the dry weather and beautiful natural surroundings.

Winter Activities

While it used to be known as primarily a family resort, that quickly changed when the back bowl was carved, creating an entire expert skiing area and giving the mountain a total of eighty runs. The vertical drop is 2,500 feet, and Silver Star Mountain boasts much better snow conditions and drier powder than most resorts in B.C. and the northwestern United States. The powder and superb snowboard park also attract many serious snowboarders.

Silver Star Mountain maintains a superb network of cross-country ski trails totaling over fifty kilometers. The trails get plenty of use, as Silver Star is home to the Canadian National Altitude Training Center, where the national cross-country and biathlon teams train in both winter and summer. Silver Star also recently hosted a World Cup cross-country race, one of the few ever held in North America.

Summer Activities

The village at Silver Star is open for the summer from June 24 to September 10.

Hikers and mountain bikers can ride a chairlift to the summit, and the village also runs a rental shop offering mountain bikes and in-line skates. Other popular activities at the village include horseback riding, swimming, and canoeing in nearby Brewers Pond. The village also hosts many weddings and banquets during the summer months. Vernon is home to several wineries, museums, and seven golf courses.

Après-ski

The village at the mountain provides several restaurants, lounges, and a wine cellar popular with the evening crowd, and the Vance Creek Saloon has live music and dancing in the winter. Vernon, about a twenty-minute drive away, offers a large variety of bars, clubs, and evening entertainment.

Transportation

Silver Star Mountain is in south-central British Columbia twenty minutes from the town of Vernon. If you’re driving, Silver Star Mountain lies about 400 kilometers from Vancouver via the Trans Canada Highway, and about 600 kilometers from Calgary. If you’re staying at the village, Silver Star Mountain will arrange shuttle service from the Kelowna airport, which is served daily by Air B.C. and Canadian Regional Airlines flights from Vancouver, Calgary, and Edmonton.

Most employees carpool from nearby Vernon, and an employee shuttle may run next winter.

Housing

Employees generally share housing or find apartments in Vernon. Check the Vernon papers for rental listings.

Employment

Most employees of Silver Star Mountain are hired in October at the company’s job fair. Most ski resort employees have to find work elsewhere in the summer, but employees of the restaurants and lodges in the village can often stay through the season.
