Phones and Mail Service in China

You can call long distance from China using IDD, a local long-distance service , though the connection is usually not good and it can be expensive. The most economical option is to get someone to call you, of course.

Calling Home

To call home, use one of the international callback companies listed in the introduction, or dial the following numbers to access your long-distance carrier's network. Complete dialing instructions will follow or an operator will come on the line to assist you:

  • AT&T : 008-010-2880
  • MCI: 018 12
  • Sprint : 108 13
  • World Direct (Executive Telecard) for Beijing, Shanghai, and Kwon Chow: 108-002-941-632
  • BC Tel, AGT, SaskTel, Manitoba Telephones, Bell Canada,
  • New Brunswick Telephones, MT&T, and Island Tel: 108-186

Mail

Mail service to China is slow and unpredictable-don't count on receiving all of your mail from home, and vice versa.

Temporary Mailing Address

Until you get set up with your address, a very reliable way to receive mail is to have it addressed to you in the following manner:

    Your Full Name
    Post Restante
    Name of City, China

The post office in the specified city will hold your mail for a number of weeks until you get there to pick it up. You can have it sent to the American Express office in Beijing at L115D West Wing, China World Trade Center, 1 Jian Guo Men Wai, Beijing, PRC.
