- Dial the telephone number.
Calling from Asia to the U.S. or Canada
Once in Asia, long-distance companies allow their customers to call home easily and economically. Although we've included some information on dialing home in each chapter, you should contact your own long-distance carrier before leaving home for further instructions. Some require that you register first before your card will work from Asia, and others will send you a wallet-size list of access codes and dialing instructions from overseas locations. The telephone numbers for some of the companies offering long-distance service are as follows:

International Callback
You can save money when calling the United States or Canada from other countries through international callback companies, which are set up to give U .S. rates on international calls. The process is rather simple: You call the company using a uniquely assigned number, and hang up after a few rings. The company then calls you back, and you hear the U.S. dial tone. You dial the number you'd like to call, and the company switches the call through on a second line. Although your call requires two lines, you'll still save money because you'll be paying U.S. rates rather than local ones.
