USING THE TELEPHONE IN JAPAN |
|
There are four kinds of phones—pink, yellow, green, and blue—all of which function differently. Pink phones take only ¥10 coins, which allow you a three
-minute local call or a few seconds of long distance. You will be cut off immediately as time expires. If you're calling somewhere outside your immediate calling area, use a yellow phone, which takes ¥100 coins.
Green phones take ¥10 and ¥100 coins, as well as phone cards. Cards can be purchased in varying denominations from roadside newspaper stands. The amount of each call is deducted from the card's value. Blue phones are for interoffice communications, so don't use them.
For domestic long distance calls, a two- or three-digit area code must precede the seven- or eight-digit number. Calling Home To call home, use one of the international call-back companies listed in the introduction, or dial the following numbers to access your long-distance
